The Communities We Work In
WROC is located at the centre of several inner-city communities including lower Beechwood Avenue, Lyndhurst Avenue, Greenwich Park and Maxfield Park in Kingston.
Like many inner-city communities, these areas are characterized by unemployment, lack of access to the best education and health services, inadequate housing, lack of proper water and sanitation and are highly vulnerable to the effects of crime and violence.
WROC also serves the rural communities of Somerset, Mount Vernon and White Horses/Botany Bay and their surrounding districts in the parish of St. Thomas. Many of these communities are characterized by small-scale farming and livestock rearing as the primary livelihood activities. However, in recent years these activities have been severely affected by the passage of Hurricanes Ivan (2004) and Dean (2007) as well as other tropical systems that have caused widespread disaster.
