Community Capacity Building — Women's Resource and Outreach Centre

Community Capacity Building

Goal - To support women and families to empower themselves through capacity, including skills-building and education, entrepreneurship and organizational development, using the arts and ICT and other means.

The Community Capacity-Building cluster has two foci:

  • Youth Development
  • Women's Empowerment

Youth Development

Homework ProgrammeHomework Programme -This programme targets 12-14 year old high school students and provides assistance with homework daily. Students also have access to computers and the Internet for assistance with school assignments. Based on requests from parents, the programme has been recently extended to include children younger than 12 years.

Lunch Programme - This programme provides sponsorship of a hot meal during lunchtime at school for the students who are enrolled in the Homework Programme.

Summer SchoolSummer Camp - WROC has hosted or sponsored attendance at summer camps since 1998. Over 50 children are involved in these camps annually and, during the 2-3 week period of attendance, they are encouraged to express themselves using the arts (music, dance, drama, art), learn new skills or discuss issues that concern them.

Women's Empowerment

Computer classRemedial Classes for women - The Remedial Programme offers classes in English, Mathematics and Computer Studies. These classes are geared towards preparing students to acquire Grade Nine certification, which qualifies them for receiving HEART training and secondary level certification.

Women Working for Progress (WWFP) - WWFP was created in 2001 with the intention of creating a space in which women could share, learn, plan, grow and act.  The members, women who live in the Lyndhurst/Greenwich Park areas, are committed to supporting, encouraging and motivating one another to become physically, mentally, intellectually and socially empowered in order to strengthen themselves, their families and their nation. In addition to their weekly meetings, the group has participated in a number of special training workshops in gender, conflict resolution and mediation, stress management, disaster mitigation and entrepreneurship.

WWFPIn 2006, the group infused drama training as part of their personal development programme. The initiative was a huge success and resulted  in requests for skits and short plays about a variety of issues including HIV and AIDS and women's empowerment and rights.
