Elderly Support — Women's Resource and Outreach Centre

Elderly Support

The elderly support services at WROC were designed to provide a safe environment for our senior residents in the client communities  and permit them to meet and fellowship with their peer  in addition to receiving vital assistance in meals, medication and counseling.

Every Thursday between 10: 00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., about 60 seniors, some from as far as Portmore, turn up for craft classes. WROC also assists them in accessing poor relief funds, bus passes, Jamaica Drugs for the Elderly Programme (JADEP) and 15 of them with meals on wheels that operates out of the Red Cross organisation. Some women have also been assisted to get away from very abusive situations and placed in golden age homes.

Their weekly meetings at WROC  featured devotion, light exercises, information sharing and a question and answer session. In this venture, WROC partnered with several national agencies, including the National Council for the Elderly, Food for the Poor, the Red Cross of Jamaica.

The Jamaica Diabetes Association has also committed itself o sending students on a regular basis to check the feet of the seniors. The median age was 75. Most were women in their mid seventies to mid-eighties. The assessment showed that many were in financial need  and had multiple medical issue including  blindness, hypertension, arthritis . For many the most pressing need was money to buy medication.
